Delivering goods and letters in a more or less constantly changing city can have it’s challenges. Having been Post Master General of the Free City of Jubylon for more than 20 years, I am happy to report for the last time, that we have managed to deliver at least half of our postings and redeliver more than 75% of the remaining postings. On that note, I am happy to retire and let the service move on, delivering packages and letters in the Free City of Jubylon, beneath the many red spires with their fine view of the ocean. Thank you all for coming to this last address I will give as Post Master General of the Free City of Jubylon and for all your support and hard work.
Part of the issue has obviously been categorizing the City’s districts, which means that we have had to switch to the relatively simple system of First, Second, Third, Fourth and Fifth District, separated by the Avenues. The order of the Districts depends on in what order they appear at the given time when travelling in a circle from our office near the canal, and towards the Grand City Library on the other side of the canal. Even considering that most of the City’s inhabitants have gotten used to the changing nature of the City, the citizens still expect to have their mail and packages delivered in due time. We are of course happy to do our duty in as short a time as possible, even thought it can be difficult navigating the many stairs and doorways that often change (unless in the very few occasions when someone ordained has given up an old wolf as a sacrifice to Lar-Tal-Bot. Those of that skill level are sadly very few. They make life less interesting and a lot easier for the public servants of the Free City of Jubylon).
The gist of the challenge in our work and it’s solution lies in sensing what district a given letter or package is meant for. This has been handled by my office’s excellent sorting crew for more than 40 years. I have only been into the Sorting Department a few times to inspect it and have often left shortly after, as the smoke and vapours in there have often made me dizzy within five minutes. But I have seen their results every single day I have worked here.
Of all the changes that have occurred under my leadership, I am most grateful for two of them. The first one was to abolish the third redelivery, as the it most often lead to resignations from the crew. Jubylon’s citizens have been more graceful in accepting this limitation and it has lead to a more stable personnel. The second change is the mark I am mostly grateful to leave behind is the regular deliveries of banned books with collections of heretical and suppressed writings by diverse hands, which now happens every Wednesday at 10 AM. The timing was chosen by pure chance, but it has worked effortlessly. Thank you all for coming!
I love the world building here. In a way, it reminds me of the struggles the postman for the Walled City of Kowloon must have gone through.
